The ISM Difference
Specifically designed for the most challenging and highest-value extraction projects, ISM's equipment combines the ability to deliver high-intensity ultrasound with a directly scalable process flow, which is unique in the industry.
High-intensity ultrasound enables high-yield extraction of alkaloids, cannabinoids, terpenes, polyphenols, recombinant proteins, and many other bioactives. In many cases, harsh organic solvents can also be replaced with green alternatives, such as ethanol or water, while still providing superior results.
All Industrial Sonomechanics® units provide precise temperature control, making it possible to extract heat-sensitive substances.
Use the same ultrasonic system to produce nano-emulsions from the extracted bioactives.
How Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE) Works:
- ISM's Turn-Key Ultrasonic Extraction System is equipped with a high-amplitude Barbell Horn® submerged into a biomass slurry in your desired solvent.
- High-amplitude ultrasound generated by UAE systems produces extremely intense acoustic cavitation and strong solvent micro-jets, essential for the extraction process.
- The micro-jets disrupt and penetrate cell membranes to extract the contents (bioactive compounds found in plants, mushrooms, and microorganisms).
- UAE can be configured to handle volumes from millimeters to hundreds of liters of slurry.
- ISM's turn-key extraction units provide precise temperature control, making it possible to extract heat-sensitive substances.
- The patented fully sealed water-cooled transducers enable 24/7 operation and make it possible to work with flammable organic solvents.
Unique Features of ISM's Equipment:
- Patented Barbell Horns® that can generate very high ultrasonic amplitudes at any scale of operation (unlike conventional high-amplitude ultrasonic horns, which are restricted to the laboratory scale only).
- Processors that can be configured in both batch and flow-through modes, and handle anywhere from a few milliliters to many hundreds of liters of slurry at a time.
- Reactor chambers (flow cells) designed without narrow gaps or capillaries, eliminating clogging (common with some alternative approaches).
- Turn-key flow-through processor configurations with an incorporated in-line high-shear mixing pump for biomass slurries with a strong tendency to settle out of the solvent.
- Possibility to replace harsh organic solvents with milder, greener and more economical food-grade alternatives and still achieve superior results.

The effectiveness of an ultrasonic processor is mainly defined by the ability of its core component called “acoustic horn” (a.k.a. horn, probe, sonitrode, waveguide) to produce high vibration amplitudes in liquids.
Conventional Horns Have Scale-Up Limitations
Conventional horns are able to produce high vibration amplitudes only when their output tip diameters are small. Ultrasonic processors based on these devices are, therefore, appropriate only for small-scale laboratory use but not for commercial production.
Barbell Horns®: The Right Way to Scale-Up
Barbell Horns® developed and patented by Industrial Sonomechanics can produce extremely high vibration amplitudes in liquids while having large output tip diameters. Our ultrasonic processors can, therefore, guarantee high-quality results at any scale, from laboratory to industrial.
DON'T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT
"I could not be more pleased with Industrial Sonomechanics as an ultrasonic equipment and NanoStablizer supplier. They provided extremely easy-to-follow instructions on how to make my translucent extract nanoemulsions with the NanoStabilizer and BSP-1200 processor."
Chandler Wiegand - Plant Scientist
"I evaluated numerous companies and determined that Industrial Sonomechanics (ISM) is the Gold Standard when it comes to nano-emulsification."
